Aux portes du Caucase et des conflits géorgiens, Sotchi offre ses plages, son climat subtropical et ses montagnes enneigées au tourisme russe. La « Perle de la mer Noire », fréquentée depuis le XIXème siècle pour ses cures, villégiature de Staline et de la nomenklatura, s’enorgueillit d’organiser les Jeux Olympiques d’hiver de 2014. Un vent nouveau souffle sur la Riviera russe : projets immobiliers, complexes touristiques de luxe auront bientôt raison des anciens sanatoriums désuets. Le Moskva, le Jemtchoujina, hôtels soviétiques aux dimensions monumentales font pâle figure face aux panneaux immobiliers vantant les futures résidences de standing… derniers témoins du régime communiste ils s’effritent lentement en attendant leur démolition. La promenade qui longe la mer offre aujourd’hui un spectacle hétéroclite où se côtoient babouchkas en robes à fleurs, militaires en permission et jeunes filles filiformes en mini-shorts, talons aiguilles et sac Prada. Dior et Chanel y ont pignon sur rue et les boîtes de nuit à ciel ouvert attirent la jeunesse dorée de Moscou ou de Saint-Pétersbourg. Car les prix flambent à Sotchi et les classes moyennes se bousculent avant que la station ne soit devenue complètement inabordable. Les autorités russes ont promis des investissements massifs estimés à 10 milliards d'euros pour faire de Sotchi un complexe de sports d'hiver de classe mondiale.
